What is Spirituality?

In dialogue with a client about the nature of human suffering and the only  

Solution to it being a spiritual journey, 

my client asks me, 'What is spirituality?' 

I replied...

Spirituality is when our external search for happiness turns inward. That's why the spiritual journey is the hero's journey. 

The hero's journey begins when the world fails the individual, 

As it always does, and then that individual finds themselves in despair, 

As they had invested everything they had in that world. 

But not only did their world fail to make them happy, 

it did quite the opposite, and made them a prisoner to fear. 

Now must this lost soul begin their search for  

Real and lasting happiness, 

The search all who are unhappy must undertake, eventually.  

Spoiler alert, I said, 

The ultimate truth everyone who searches for it finds, 

Is that, being created by love, 

 we are only love, 

And we're all connected. 

Only this awareness makes a soul truly happy. 

The Truth with a capital T, 

Is something that is universal; it applies to all people in all space and time, 

Like everyone everywhere wants to be happy. 

And why do you suppose the desire to be happy is universal? I asked my client. 

It's because we were created happy by love, 

That's our essential state, 

Our original state the soul can't completely forget. 

Happiness is the state the soul WILL search for, through time and eternity alike,  

until it finds it at last. 

Once the soul returns to its original state as happy and reconnected, 

The separation is ended in the mind of that soul, 

And the world is left another shining footprint 

Showing the path for the weary to follow back home.  

Well, my client said, that makes a lot of sense, 

And you've given me a lot to think about. 

I get a lot from our talks. 

I thought to myself, God, I love my job
